A New Years Resolution We Can ALL Keep!

New Year's Resolution
4/1/2014

We all know what we need to do to be healthier: exercise more, eat better, etc. etc. But there could be one thing that we can do that will help us achieve all of our goals into and beyond February, and help you with those resolutions all year long. That one thing? Sleep more!

As children we hated naps. Now that we're all stressed out, over-worked adults, don't you wish you could go back in time and confront younger you about enjoying and getting the most out of the free nap time that was given to you every day? I know I do.

It is well known that sleep loss can leads to weight gain because it affects the way out bodies process and store carbohydrates, and by altering the level of hormones that affect our appetite. While a minor lack of sleep can lead to inconveniences such as memory problems and concentration issues, a major lack of sleep can lead to issues such as hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, irregular heartbeat and can affect a person's immune system, preventing them from fighting off what would have otherwise been quite possibly a more benign virus.

So if you want a resolution that doesn't require you to leave the house, balance your checkbook or keeping promises that you don't intend to keep, simply curling up and falling asleep a little more this year could help you in the long run.

(Obviously some of these issues require the attention of a qualified medical doctor....Aunt Jane's advice doesn't count for some of these more serious issues.)
