Could Your Lack of Sleep be Contributing to Weight Gain?

Sleeping and Weight Gain
6/27/2016

If you’re gaining weight or even just struggling to lose weight, your sleep habits may be to blame. Many people who are suffering from sleep deprivation don’t even know it. They think it’s normal to feel groggy and exhausted all day long. Doctors used to believe that in order for sleep deprivation to really affect your weight, it had to be significant. We now know that is not the case. One obvious reason that lack of sleep can affect your weight is that you’re more likely to hit the snooze and choose not to work out and after work you’re so exhausted, there’s no way you’re going to go then either. In this post we’ll talk about some not so well known ways lack of sleep can contribute to weight gain.

The higher your level of sleep deprivation, the higher your levels of the stress hormone cortisol will be, which increases your appetite. You’re probably not going to be craving healthy foods either. You want something easy that’s going to make you feel good for the moment. Oftentimes the food you pick will be high in fat and carbohydrates because they cause your body to produce serotonin which can help calm you down.

A recent study showed that sleep deprivation causes your hormones to get out of whack. Your ghrelin levels, which tell you you’re hungry, are increased and your leptin levels, which signal satiety, are decreased. In the study sleep deprived subjects ate an average of 300 more calories a day! Also, people who only spent four hours in bed as opposed to ten, gained two pounds more during the week long study.

When you’re extremely sleep deprived, your body may go into survival mode. Lack of sleep can make your body think that it’s in danger. Your metabolism will slow because your body is trying to maintain resources while also begging for more fuel, even if it’s unnecessary.
