Four Ways to Ensure Better Sleep

1. Follow a sleep schedule

A healthy adult usually needs between seven and eight hours of sleep. This means that it’s important to set aside at least 8 hours of sleep each night for sleeping. It’s also important to go to bed at the same time every night, this includes the weekends. If your sleep varies a lot between the week and the weekend, you’re confusing your body’s sleep-wake cycle.

2. Be conscious of what you eat or drink

It’s important not to go to bed on a full stomach or on an empty stomach. The best thing to do is eat a small meal or snack a couple hours before your bedtime. It gives the food time to digest and ensures you’re not hungry when you’re going to sleep. Do not consume nicotine or caffeine within five hours of sleep, for some people, even longer. Alcohol may make it easier to fall asleep, but it’s often not the restful sleep that will have you feeling good in the morning.

3. Maintain a restful sleeping environment

Different people have different environments that make them feel comfortable and restful. For most of us, the ideal sleeping area is one that is dark, quiet, and cool. Light is one of the biggest issues, because many people are using their phones or tablets right before bed which throws off their natural sleep cycle. White noise machines and fans also create a restful effect for many people.

4. Use a quality mattress

A new mattress that suits your needs can make all the difference in getting a restful night’s sleep.
