A National Sleep Foundation poll shows that 70% of respondents agree that a comfortable pillow is imperative for getting a good night’s sleep. This can make it hard for some sleepers to part with their beloved favorite pillows. Beyond the pillows breaking down over time causing lost support, they also become a sponge for dirt, sweat, mites and other critters, as well as dead skin.

Dust mites are especially hazardous to people who have allergies. Though you may not know it, up to 67% of allergy sufferers are allergic to dust mites that gather in their bedding. If you wake up feeling with a dry throat, itchy eyes, and are all stuffed up, you may be allergic to your pillow.

To help curb the effects of these mites and other yucky things that end up in your pillow, you should go beyond just a pillowcase and use zippered pillow protectors made from vinyl or plastic. Be sure to wash your pillowcases and bedding at least every three weeks. Your actual pillows should be washed at least every six months in hot water and detergent. If you have memory foam pillows they should not be washed, but fortunately are antimicrobial and should stay free of mites.

In general your pillows should be replaced every two to three years depending on their use, material, and how often they have been washed. A good trick to tell if it’s time to replace your pillow is to fold it in half and let go – the pillow should completely regain its shape. If it doesn’t, it’s time to throw it out.
