Overview

The Sweet Dreams Latex Plush is a distinctly different kind of mattress. It does not use a traditional quilted top, deep button tufting, slow memory foam or a spring unit. Instead, it places three inches of natural D55 latex directly beneath a smooth, unquilted cover.

That construction allows you to feel what makes latex special: plush cushioning with quick response and a light, buoyant pushback. You settle into the mattress, but you do not have to wait for the foam to slowly release every time you roll over.

Beneath the latex is an exceptionally substantial support system: 5½ inches of 2.5 lb / 26 ILD Foamex over a four-inch 1.8 lb / 32 ILD stabilizing base. Altogether, the mattress contains 12½ inches of carefully selected foam layers.

Comfort and feel

The Sweet Dreams is plush, but it is not a slow, deeply sinking mattress.

Natural latex compresses under the shoulders, hips and other pressure points, then rebounds almost immediately as you move. That quick recovery gives the mattress its slightly bouncy quality—in a good way. It feels lively, buoyant and easy to move around on rather than heavy or restrictive.

The absence of quilting and tufting is deliberate. A thick quilt package can soften or mute the response of the materials underneath it. Here, there is very little standing between the sleeper and the latex, so its elasticity and cushioning are much easier to feel.

Support system

The heart of the Sweet Dreams is its 5½-inch Foamex support core.

Foamex® is a respected name from one of North America’s major foam-manufacturing lineages, now continued through FXI. More importantly, Capitol publishes the actual specification: 2.5 pounds per cubic foot with a 26 ILD.

Those two numbers describe different things.

The 26 ILD (Initial Load Deflection) tells us about firmness. It allows the core to provide support without making the mattress feel unnecessarily hard beneath the latex.

The 2.5 lb density tells us how much actual foam material is present. Higher-density polyurethane foam generally retains its support, height and original feel better than the lighter 1.0–1.5 lb foams commonly used in mass-market mattresses.

Capitol identifies this as its highest-density foam core. In practical terms, this is the best polyurethane support foam Capitol currently uses—and the company uses a full 5½ inches of it, not merely a thin layer included to improve the specification list.

The additional four-inch layer of 1.8 lb / 32 ILD foam creates a firmer stabilizing foundation beneath the Foamex. It helps prevent the mattress from bottoming out and gives the entire construction a solid base.

Why natural latex?

Natural latex behaves differently from memory foam and ordinary polyurethane comfort foam.

It is highly elastic, so it compresses under pressure and returns to shape almost immediately. This creates buoyant pressure relief without the delayed recovery that can make memory foam feel restrictive.

Our take

The Sweet Dreams is one of those mattresses that makes much more sense after you lie on it.

It does not look like a conventional pillowtop because Capitol has not buried the latex beneath inches of quilting, decorative stitching and tufting. Instead, the mattress feels clean, smooth and immediately responsive. You can roll over without climbing out of a body impression, and the latex provides cushioning without swallowing you.

We also like that Capitol did not put premium latex over an ordinary commodity core. The 5½-inch, 2.5 lb Foamex layer is the best polyurethane support foam Capitol currently offers, and the four-inch base beneath it makes the construction even more substantial.

This is a unique, genuinely well-built mattress for someone who wants plushness without sluggishness, a little bounce instead of deep sink and premium materials where they actually matter—inside the bed.
